The Seventh Solace
|
The Haftorah readings for the final seven Shabbatot of the year are called Sheva D'Nechemta (loosely, the Seven Haftorot of Comfort) because instead of following the Torah portion order, they focus on the comfort and consolation in the aftermath of Tisha B'Av, the saddest day in the Jewish calendar. These Haftorot contain stirring prophecies of a glorious messianic future offering Am Yisrael solace and hope after the destruction of the first Beit HaMikdash, and continue to resonate with us today. This past Tuesday, Rabbi Kaplan's weekly Kabbalah & the Bible classes launched Solace in Seven, a seven-part series focusing on these Haftorot. Wegot off to a great start with nearly eighty attendees, and hundreds more who watched live online around the world ! If you missed it, visit our website to view the lecture. Learn why this time of the year has such redemptive potential that it is actually considered a happy time. End the Jewish year of 5770 on a spiritual high for the next six weeks starting this Tuesday. Discover the deeper meaning of the comforting sentiments encoded in these timeless spiritual messages, delivered by our prophets on G-d's behalf. And see how they reverberate over the ages with awe-inspiring intensity, clarity and relevancy!

Double-Down Your Comfort
|
In this week's Haftorah, the first in the solace-filled series offering consolation for our long and painful Galut, begins with the words Nachamu, Nachamu (Comfort, Comfort), a Divine call to the prophets to console the broken hearts of Am Yisrael. This Shabbat is therefore traditionally called Shabbat Nachamu or The Shabbat of Comfort. So isn't it great that our beautiful new Shul is both comfortable and comforting? "Double" your efforts to join us this Shabbat, and hear the beautiful words of Isaiah, as we receive this unique gift of Divine double comfort delivered by the Navi.

Kids Highlights - Please Please Me
|
|

This week's Parsha is Parshat Vaetchanan. The children will learn all about how Moshe, the leader of the Jewish Nation, begged Hashem to let him into Eretz Yisroel, but Hashem said No! Instead, Moses will lead his generation into the Holy Land when Moshiach arrives speedily, amen! The children will play a fun game called 'How many times can you say 'please''? The children will also play 'I Spy From A Mountain So High'. This week's parsha also has the Aseret HaDibrot (more commonly know as The Ten Commandments) so the children will make a yummy Torah out of candy, and learn the song 'Vezos Hatorah Asher Sam Moshe...' The Mensch of the Week from last Shabbat was Galit Shneiderman - Mazel Tov Galit! |

Youth Minyan
|
Join us this week with your kids at our fantastic Parents & Children Minyan. Even though many kids are still away at camp, the pre-davening warm-up begins as always at 9:15 am sharp with delicious cocoa to get us into the spirit. This week's Chazzan is Jonathon Ben-Mordechai, the Gabai is Noah Suchall and the Rabbi is Andrew Mor. Make the most of this experience, be there on time and be sure to read up on the Parsha together with your children in The Little Midrash Says so your child can be a winner in the Parsha Candy Game! Because the crowds are a little smaller, everyone needs to make an extra effort to attend so that our children can continue to fully enjoy the davening experience. We thank all parents in advance for their consideration and dedication!

| They Made A Sacrifice - Will You? |
The Peace of Mind project for IDF veterans is progressing. Asteering committee has met to discuss how to proceed with plans to host a group of Israeli soldiers who have been emotionally affected while serving in the IDF, in defence of Am & Eretz Yisrael (the Nation and Land of Israel). These soldiers have no mental illnesses or behavioural problems; rather they face emotional and situational issues. We'd like to host a group of 15 soldiers and two therapists sometime in mid-October to help these brave young men and women overcome their issues and fully regain their emotional equilibrium. We urgently need to immediately expand the committee because we've identified five distinct committees that need staffing to ensure success. This programme will cost about $50,000. All contributions will be used to defer the associated costs; tax receipts will be issued for all amounts received. We also need volunteers to host a soldier or a therapist at their home for about one week. Please contact the Shul office if you would like to help. We are waiting for further details from Israel and hope to have all the relevant information by our next meeting, scheduled for Thursday, July 29 at 8.30 p.m. at the Shul. Please do consider participating in this wonderful experience. It is incumbent upon each of us to make a small, temporary sacrifice to help alleviate the pain of those who have truly sacrificed.

| 13 Is a Lucky Number |
Our Family Shul is soon entering its Bar Mitzvah year, a time of new communal maturity. To celebrate this milestone, we draw inspiration from our Eternal Teacher Moshe (Moses) who, on the last day of his life, finished writing the first 13 Torah scrolls, giving one to each of the tribes to mark Am Yisrael's 'coming of age.' Therefore, we are now launching the writing of our first ever Community Torah Scroll to be written during the course of the entire year to celebrate our communal Bar Mitzvah! A committee is being formed to plan and implement this ambitious project. If you'd like to join or help out in any way, please contact Rabbi Kaplan in the next few days.

| See You...In September... at the Ohel |
With the current hot, hazy days, it's hard to believe that in only a few weeks fall will arrive. Now is the perfect time to plan ahead and ensure that the year of U'foratzta goes out on a true spiritual high! This year, the last Shabbat of the year 5770 (known as Shabbat Selichot) falls on September 4th, coinciding with the Labour Day Weekend. We're currently planning a Grande Finale U'foratzta
Shabbaton. Join us for an incredible, spiritually uplifting weekend at the Rebbe's Ohel in NYC. Although it's seven weeks away, we need to confirm all reservations now - in the long weekend, all the rental RV's will be taken unless we book now! To join us for this very special experience, please call us before the next Shabbat. Although we hope to accommodate everyone, we cannot promise to guarantee any requests received after July 30th. So decide now, or you might miss the bus!

e-Torah - Parsha in a Nutshell
|

Moses tells the people of Israel how he implored G-d to allow him to enter the land of Israel, but G-d refused, instructing him instead to ascend a mountain and see the Promised Land.
Continuing his "review of the Torah," Moses describes the Exodus from Egypt and the Giving of the Torah, declaring them unprecedented events in human history. "Has there ever occurred this great thing, or has the likes of it ever been heard? Did ever a people hear the voice of G-d speaking out of the midst of the fire... and live? ... You were shown, to know, that the L-rd is G-d... there is none else beside Him."
Moses predicts that, in future generations, the people will turn away from G-d, worship idols, and be exiled from their land and scattered amongst the nations; but from there they will seek G-d, and return to obey His commandments.
Our Parshah also includes a repetition of the Ten Commandments, and the verses of the Shema which declare the fundamentals of the Jewish faith: the unity of G-d ("Hear O Israel: the L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is one"); the mitzvot to love G-d, study His Torah, and bind "these words" as tefillin on our arms and heads, and inscribe them in the mezuzot affixed on the doorposts of our homes.
